Late Round Steeler

My take is that Mike Tomlin will have a running back committee this year, he can’t trust James Conner to stay healthy and the Steelers have declined the option to take up his 5th year so he’s moving onto pastures new after this season.

That leaves you with 3 running backs after James Conner who all have their own skill sets.

Anthony McFarland – is a fast paced back but I don’t see him as anything more than change of pace guy.

Jaylen Samuel’s – he’s a pass catching back at best but doesn’t work as well running through the trenches as he does receiving.

The guy I’ll be picking up is Benny Snell, hes something you need to keep an eye on or worth grabbing in the later rounds of your fantasy draft as a stash. Snell took advantage of injuries to Conner and Samuel’s in his rookie season, and had a number of good games that had shown glimpses of what he can do. The coaches in Pittsburgh say he has a bright future and I believe he’ll be the RB2 come September for the Steelers.

David DeCastro said ” I just like how hard he runs, especially those third-down runs, he’s always moving downhill and getting those extra yards. That’s nice for us.”

I feel the only downside to Snell is hes not great as a passing back. He needs to work on that. But besides this my prediction is that given the chance and snaps he will surprise a few people. He’ll definitely improve his numbers on his rookie season.

Let’s see the stats match up with current top of the Steelers depth chart on Conner and compare to Snell.

Rush Attempts: Conner 116 – Snell  108

Rush Yards: Conner 464 – Snell 426

Yard per carry: Conner 4.0 – Snell 3.9

Broken Tackle %: Conner 12.5% – Snell 15.7%

Avg Yard after contact: Conner 2.4 – Snell 2.9

Avg Yard after catch: Conner 8.9 – Snell 8.7

Based off the above he’s not far off similar numbers to Conner who’s going alot earlier in drafts and is an injury risk. So go grab him in the later rounds of your start up drafts or waiver wires as he could end up being Steelers RB1 if Conner has another injury type season and as previously stated James Conner won’t be on their roster next year.
